Growth by innovation — since 1989

Special purpose machines, engineered to solve the problem others won't touch.

Aarathi Engineers designs and builds custom industrial equipment out of Chennai — and pioneered Zero Residue Green Torrefaction, converting municipal solid waste into charcoal with zero landfill and zero mass incineration, operating in India since 2016.

About us

Three decades of custom engineering.

  • Founded in 1989 by Mr. Ramesh Rao
  • Taken forward today by his son, Mr. Ajith Rao
  • Delivering customized industrial solutions from inception
  • Pioneers of Torrefaction technology for MSW/biomass at commercial scale
  • Engineering wing of the Aarathi Group, setting up plants across India and overseas

Vision

To be a leading advanced-equipment manufacturer, competing globally on the latest technology.

Mission

To meet customer requirements with innovative designs, keeping clients ahead on technology and economics.

Pioneers

First to design and install an MSW-to-fuel line in India, Chennai, 2016.

Experience

7 lines installed, operating for 4+ years. 9 lines currently under construction.

Speed to COD

Consistently the fastest to install and bring a line into operation.

What we do

From first design to daily operation.

The status quo is broken

Every tonne of MSW today goes one of two ways. Both fail.

Landfilling

  • Generates methane — ~25x more potent than CO2
  • Leachate seeps into soil and groundwater
  • Trash hills degrade land value and city aesthetics
  • Land runs out — the mountain keeps growing

Mass incineration

  • Emits dioxins and furans without strict controls
  • Requires environmental clearance and long-term PPAs
  • Plant availability typically under 80%
  • 48-month construction periods are common

Zero Residue Green Torrefaction converts 100% of MSW into useful byproducts — no landfill, no open incineration, no sorting of the incoming waste stream.

The process

How torrefaction works.

Torrefaction is a thermochemical treatment of feedstock at 250–300°C, carried out in a controlled oxygen environment. Moisture and volatiles are released; what remains is a solid with high carbon content — hydrophobic, and with a high gross calorific value.

For technical diligence

Mass balance, per 400 tpd line.

Vented moisture and volatile gas are process off-takes, not landfilled residue — the process is designed for zero solid residue to landfill.

Byproducts & markets

Four saleable outputs. Zero waste to landfill.
